Melbourne, VICTORIA, 3031, Australia
The Federal Government has the power to stop new fossil fuel projects around Australia, like the Adani coal mine and fracking developments in the Northern Territory. But our MPs are in bed with the fossil fuel industry – and it’s up to us to break that relationship. This will be the first federal election that will be fought and won over climate change. Therefore, to capture this momentum come join with fellow like-minded citizens to talk about the science behind 1.5 degrees of warming and what this will mean for us in Australia. We have an awesome line up of local speakers talk about the latest climate report, the stakes of the election, and how you can get involved. Speaker 1. Prof. Rodney Keenan from Melbourne University. Rod has a B. Sc. (Forestry) from the ANU and a PhD in forest ecology from University of British Columbia, with research interests in forests and climate change, forest ecosystem services and forest and environmental policy. He has undertaken research across Australia, in Canada, Papua New Guinea and in South East Asia. Speaker 2. Nyah Shahab from Student Strikers. Year 12 student, Nyah Shahab, 17, from Swinburne Senior Secondary College wanted to get involved in School Strike 4 Climate following her experience fighting for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers with Melbourne Youth with Refugees. Speaker 3. Pheobe Preuss from Living Koko. Phoebe Preuss and partners founded Living Koko from a desire to reconnect with and support local people from PNG. By putting pressure on our politicians to cut ties with the fossil fuel industry we are one step closer to creating a safe climate future. A future with no new fossil fuel projects. A future with 100% renewable energy. A future below 1.5°C.
